The Key to a 700 GMAT Score (or Higher) Multiple Levels of Strategy
The Key to a 700 GMAT Score (or Higher) Multiple Levels of Strategy GMAT MBA Admissions Blog There is just something about breaking that 700-score threshold on the GMAT that feels, and perhaps really is, very important when you are applying to business school. In this article, Iâll share a less âtechnicalâ view on how to approach the GMAT to improve your chances of scoring 700 or better. The title of this blog post says âmultiple levels of strategy.â So first, letâs define the word strategy. What is a strategy? When I was a new analyst at a âstrategy consultingâ firm, fresh out of undergraduate business school, one of the first questions they raised in training was, what is a strategy? People would give long answers. Some might start talking about identifying attractive markets, or building better products, or having lower costs, or designing better processes, etc. But really, a strategy is just the plan you put in place for allocating various resources (your time, focus, money, people, etc.) to achieve a goal. In my first job, we were taught that âstrategyâ is about consciously choosing what you will and what you will not do. And weâve previously written on this blog thatsuccessful people use strategies. They succeed because of how they think and plan, not because of innate talent. Why is having a âstrategyâ so critical when taking the GMAT? The GMAT is indeed a test of academic skills and so there are specific concepts and ideas youâll have to understand, but more importantly itâs a test of flexible, creative, logical, and strategic thinking. Itâs not a math test focused on specific concepts that you can cram for or master through memorization. The math concepts on the GMAT, by and large, donât go beyond what most U.S. students learn in 10th grade. But, the GMAT covers a very wide range of math topics, employs a variety of question types, and asks questions in a variety of ways that force you to think logically to reason your way to the best answer. When I talk about the importance of strategy when it comes to the GMAT, I think there are three âlevelsâ of strategy to consider. Level #1: Strategically creating your study plan If âstrategyâ is about choosing what you will and wonât do, then level one is about having a structured study plan thatâs customized to your strengths and weaknesses and general situation. A strategic GMAT student will take a diagnostic test early in the process. He or she will then design a plan of attack that allocates more time to addressing deficiencies, and less time to areas where skills are already very strong. A solid, strategic study plan will also allocate more time to concept review and practice problems early on, and more time to practice tests and review of missed problems as the exam date nears. It will also be specific. As you design your study plan, set a test date and target score, determine when and where you will study week by week, and plan when youâll take practice tests to track progress. If you donât set a goal and work back in time to develop a plan to meet that goal, you are less likely to be happy with your eventual score. Level #2: Strategically attacking questions on the test Many people fail to realize that the GMAT is more like a game than a math test. Itâs a crucial failure. You need to have a strategy for each question. Hereâs an example of this. One of the simple formulas youâll need to know for the GMAT is the Pythagorean theorem for lengths of sides of a right triangle. A^2 + B^2 = C^2. Now, letâs say the question says A = 3.2 and B = 4.2, so what does C = ? The answer choices are: A) 3.9 B) 4.9 C) 5.3 D) 6.5 E) 8.7 If you treat this like a math test and you remember the formula, you start plugging numbers into the formula. But, now you are working with decimals, itâs taking a little while, and you might make a calculation error. But, what if your strategy is to find ways to remove the need to use decimals, operating under the correct assumption that 90% of the time, the GMAT does not really want you to be working out multiplication on paper. It wants to force you to find creative alternatives to solve the problem. In this case, you would say well, 3.2 is pretty close to 3. And 4.2 is close to 4. If it was 3 and 4 I was working with, Iâd know that 3^2 = 9 and 4^2 = 16, and then Iâd be looking for the square root for 9 + 16 = 25, and thatâs 5. Then, youâd say OK, so the answer has to be B or C. Finally, because you started with one number a little higher than 3 and another thatâs a little higher than 4, the answer must be C. It would take you probably 30 seconds to work this through in your head, and youâd know for sure you were right. Many GMAT questions are like this. You can in fact answer the question correctly by just plugging the numbers into the formula. Thatâs one approach. But there are usually less quantitative but perhaps far more effective and strategic paths to the right answer. Level #3: Strategically managing your time during the test So, level 1 was about high-level strategy from a study planning perspective. Level 2 was about approaching questions strategically when you have a handle on the question. But what do you do on the test when you are faced with a question you really are not too sure about. You may think you know what to do, but you fundamentally feel stumped. The GMAT puts most students under intense time pressure which both a) leads to missed problems just because time runs out and b) raises most folksâ stress levels, which can sometimes lead to unforced errors. This raises two important âlevel 3â strategies. First, if you really donât know, donât spend time trying to figure out, on the spot, how to do the problem. Instead, spend your scarce resource (time) identifying how to increase the chances youâll guess the right answer, and leave more time for working out future problems you do understand. So, take the question from the last section. But assume you donât remember the Pythagorean theorem. You know thereâs some sort of formula, but you are drawing a blank on what it is. You could quickly realize youâre in trouble because you donât remember the formula. Then, you could look at the picture and say well, C has to be longer than A or B, so answer choice A is not right. And if B = 4.2, it doesnât seem like C could equal 8.7. Thatâs too long. So, you choose B, C, or D. Now, your chances of getting it right are 1/3, instead of 1/5. Thatâs strategic guessing using process of elimination. Second, if you start to panic during the test because you are running out of time or just feel like you are performing poorly, though it may seem counterintuitive, you might want to just stop and breath for 30 seconds. This strategy allows you to calm yourself and more accurately identify when you do or do not truly know how to attack a problem. Youâll spend 30 seconds collecting yourself but may then find yourself better positioned to make the right decisions as you engage with the next few problems. In sum, remember that the key to success on the GMAT is strategy, and that applies to high level planning, thinking through specific questions, and time management on the day of the exam. Helping students prepare for GCSE and A-level coursework
Helping students prepare for GCSE and A-level coursework Students in their final year of GCSEs or A-levels will now be looking to begin the coursework component of their exams. While the UK system weighs heavily in favour of structured exams, coursework entries can make up to 25% of the final grade, and a strong performance here can make all the difference to final marks. How can you as a home tutor help your students create their best work? Although necessary boundaries are in place, coursework offers the opportunity for students to explore and specialise in the areas which interest them most. At the outset discuss with your pupil what they believe these areas to be, and identify a topic that plays to both strengths and interests. Make sure the scope of the selected title is appropriate and realistic given the time-frame and word limits of the project. The best topics tend to be those with a relatively narrow focus, allowing the student to delve deep into a subject and acquire specialist knowledge in one area, rather than spreading themselves too thinly. Private tutors should work through the criteria with students to make sure that they fully understand what is required of them. A strong appreciation of what an examiner will be looking for early on can help prevent wasted effort and needless research. You should help your pupils draw together a reading list, dividing possible sources into essential reading and those which will help provide background and context to the main thrust of the research. GCSE and A-level coursework are golden opportunities to help your students develop their own study interests and show off their talents. A well thought out study plan will help them achieve their maximum potential and mitigate pressure when it comes to final exams.
High School Seniors How to Be Successful This Fall
High School Seniors How to Be Successful This Fall High School Seniors: Balancing Classes, AP, SAT/ACT, College Apps, and More This Fall High School Seniors: Balancing Classes, AP, SAT/ACT, College Apps, and More This Fall High school seniors looking to go to a four-year college next year are all in a similar, stressful situation. Your schedule is full, your new classes are very hard, youâre supposed to be taking critical standardized tests, and you have college applications to start and finish. All of this while you are having the added pressure of deciding where you want to spend the next four years and what you want to do with your life. Not to mention the anticipation of parting ways with many of your closest friends shortly our private Costa Mesa tutors are here to help with your senior year. Overall, it really isnât an easy time for anyone. Unfortunately, reading this wonât be able to take all of that stress away. What it will do, however, is give you some guidance to help alleviate your difficulties and help lead you toward success in all of these endeavors. After helping many students in similar situations, here is some of my advice about how to balance everything in this busy and difficult time: SAT and ACT Hopefully, youâve already taken your standardized test of choice at least once. Hopefully, you also prepared for that test by studying and taking practice tests. If you have, this is good news: with your upcoming test you are only trying to improve your previous scores, and you have a good grasp on the test already. You are likely a little rusty on the material if you havenât been studying over the summer, so you need to refresh yourself. For many students, there is simply no time to take a full-length practice test because of their other obligations. Instead, take each section one at a time with a timer. Take a timed reading section one day, and a timed math section the next. Write a timed essay if you are taking the essay. By doing this, you only need to find about an hour of spare time to study, while still getting used to the questions again and getting comfortable with the time limits and pacing. If this is your first test and you have not studied at all, you are in a more difficult situation. You simply must take a timed, full-length practice test before your real test if you want to perform close to your potential. You will do poorly (compared to what you are capable of) if your first time taking the full SAT or ACT is on test day. Wake up early on a weekend if you have to and take a full practice test. Score it and review your answers or have someone experienced to do it for you. Students almost always improve by huge margins after taking the test for the first time; make sure that the first time is just practice. SAT Subject Tests Many students will also be taking the subject tests this time of year to apply to the few universities that require them. Because usually, only the more selective schools will be asking for the SAT subject tests, this means that you will want to do well on them. Unfortunately, these tests are not well-known and are often an afterthought for students who find themselves forced to take them in the fall of their senior year without much or any preparation. These are still standardized tests, and you still need to be familiar with them if you want to do well. Like the other standardized tests, you should be taking practice tests. Luckily, the subject tests are not very long. Get ahold of some practice tests (official ones if possible) and take them when you have free time. These tests do require detailed knowledge of the subject you are taking them for, so you will likely have to review your old class material and study. Take the practice tests early, so you know which tests you are best at and what material youâve forgotten and need to practice our private Costa Mesa test prep tutors will help you score high. AP Tests Senior year is also the year when students have the most advanced placement (AP) classes on their schedule. These classes have a lot of added difficulty, as well as the anticipation of trying to pass the AP test at the end of the year. Luckily, that test is a long way away, and you have plenty of time to study and prepare for it. If you also need to prepare for other standardized tests, make college applications and feel overwhelmed, then I recommend putting some of your AP prep on the backburner. This does not mean you should slack off in these classes. You could easily fall behind and see your grades slip (which you will have to report to the colleges you applied to, even though your applications are submitted before you know your final grades). Focus in class and make sure you understand everything to the best of your ability. You just might need to save the extra studying and AP prep for later. Donât start taking AP practice tests and having AP review sessions if it means sacrificing your SAT/ACT prep or your college applications. These are more important right now, and you need to put the time and effort into them before dedicating extra attention to AP material (READ: Costa Mesa Tutoring Tips: 5 Time-Saving Study Tips). New Classes The above points are referencing studying that you do to pass the AP exams ultimately â" a goal that you should have if you are taking an AP class. You should save AP test specific studying for later in the year if you are too busy now, but you canât neglect your grades and new classes. Here are three simple tips to help you stay on top of new classes during a busy time. Stay organized. Donât start cramming all of your papers into one folder because you think you donât have the time to organize them. Donât write your notes on loose scratch paper or keep every classâs notes in the same notebook. Donât miss homework or test dates because you didnât bother to write them down. Make yourself do at least the bare minimum for organization. Youâve been in school long enough to know what to do and what not to do. You donât need to go over the top and doing anything extra special this year to be organized, but you do need to keep yourself on top of things while your schedule is busy. Do everything early. It is easier said than done to avoid procrastination, but it is indisputable that finishing work early will save you from a lot of unnecessary extra stress. When you get an assignment, do the assignment. When you learn about a test, study for the test. When youâre assigned a big project, start it right away. This tactic will save you this fall. Find someone to hold you accountable. This tip goes with the two above. You need something to hold you accountable for doing things like staying organized, doing work early, and studying. It could be a parent, or a tutor, or a friend. Someone who knows what you need to do and can check in on you to make sure youâre doing it. Find a classmate who will always do the homework early with you so you can make each other do it. Tell your mom your study plan and write it down so she can follow up with you and make sure youâre staying according to schedule. Get an experienced tutor who can guide you in your application process or standardized testing and make sure youâre doing what you need to do. It is easy to slack and procrastinate when thereâs no one to call you out on it. These are all examples of ways to avoid that. College Applications You need to do this early and give them the attention they deserve. Deadlines for regular decision vary, but the most common is usually January 1st. However, they can be as early as November and as late as next spring. However, knowing the deadlines shouldnât be too important if you arenât procrastinating. Aim to finish your regular decision applications in October, so you have plenty of time to review, improve, and add new schools. If you havenât already, then contact the people you will be asking for letters of recommendation. Do it as soon as possible and tell them exactly what you would ideally like them to write about you. The more detail you give your recommender, the more likely they are to give you a letter that isnât generic and has the details you want colleges to read. Make your list of schools, familiarize yourself with application requirements and formats, and start writing your essays, personal statements, and resumes. You should ideally tailor each of these documents to each school, but you should still have your base templates to go off of. Give yourself several weeks to polish, individualize, and have others read and review. A good tactic is to make yourself do something application related every day. Tell yourself that you just need to work on an application for only five minutes. Often, these five minutes will turn into much more, but even if it doesnât, five minutes is still progress. Progress every day will add up. You will feel better, avoid procrastination, gain experience, and build a healthy habit. Make sure you stay accountable and do at least a little bit of work each day. Before you know it, you will be finished, have quality applications, and have plenty of time before the deadlines. What Is Inorganic Chemistry? What is inorganic chemistry? It is the study of matter, and the production and consumption of chemical substances from them. The aim of this science is to obtain knowledge about the properties of chemicals that are important in the manufacture of every commodity produced by man. These are molecules, atoms, and chemical bonds. There are a number of ways of obtaining this knowledge. There are an innumerable number of experimental procedures in the field of science. Chemical compositions can be easily obtained from the book or laboratory that deals with organic chemistry. It is to be noted that there are a variety of compounds in nature. This means that inorganic chemistry may have multiple theories in regard to each compound. The topic of chemistry has given rise to numerous theories. Inorganic chemistry includes the study of materials that are completely different from the chemical compounds used by man in the manufacturing of medicines, fuels, plastics, pain ts, building materials, etc. A major part of an organic chemist's job is to make sure that all the methods of chemical synthesis and chemical composition are done correctly. This enables him to comprehend the meaning of organic chemistry with the help of the various methods of synthesis and composition.Inorganic chemistry is the study of material, and the properties of substances that are useful in the construction and the production of various things. These substances are made up of elements, atoms, and chemical bonds. Each component is either inorganic or organic. The term inorganic refers to substances that do not contain oxygen. The term organic refers to substances that have some kind of molecule with oxygen as their component. This subject is very important in that the subjects are considered to be important in every field of science. What is inorganic chemistry used for? Chemical analysis of chemical compounds is a popular field of studyin this science. These compounds are use d in the manufacture of plastics, paints, and fuels. Most of these substances are inorganic in nature. The heavy metal chromium is a compound that is known to be inorganic. The compound is inorganic, because it does not contain any molecule of oxygen. There are a number of subjects that involve these inorganic compounds. One of the famous fields of study in this field is the study of gasoline. This material has long been a problem for the maintenance of automobiles. The particular production process involved in the manufacture of gasoline requires knowledge of the composition of the ingredients. Petroleum that are stored in an underground reservoir and then pumped in the surface of the earth and out of the reservoir are a more interesting subject of study in this field. This is a constant process. The constituents of the petroleum are analyzed and calculated so that the quantity of the gas is created which can be used in the process of producing gasoline.
